Drake Primary Day Out Aims to Blend Learning and Fun

A group of Plymouth pupils swapped their classroom for the Mount Batten Water Sports and Activities Centre for a morning mixing fun and learning this term.

The year 4 children from enjoyed a range of archery games followed by a tour of the historic Mount Batten Tower.

The trip was organised as part of Plymouth Sound National Marine Park’s flagship education programme, ‘Sea in Our School’. The project focusses on building connections to Plymouth Sound National Marine Park while supporting curriculum development at participating schools.

The Mount Batten Water Sports and Activities Centre is currently undergoing a revamp as part of the £22million Plymouth Sound National Marine Park transformation.

At Drake Primary, part of the Reach South Academy Trust, they take an interactive, thematic approach to teaching history, using a curriculum based around children understanding where they are in the world, who they are and why.

Jacqueline Stephens, Executive Headteacher at Drake Primary Academy, said:

“At Drake Primary, we are great believers in taking learning beyond the classroom. Experiences like this are perfect for finding new ways to engage pupils. Our year 4s had a great time learning how to use a bow and arrow and picked up some interesting local history knowledge at the same time.”
